Here is Haidas in the morning about 18 hours before she foaled. She was hungry. She ate everything that I gave her that morning and evening. (she was searching for some more 'Mare and foal' pellets we were feeding her. She goes crazy over them.)
There were two distinct things I saw that day that threw up the signs for I am going to have this foal soon. This is on day 328 Gestation period
#1 was the waxing. In the picture below on her udder you can see the colostrum beading up on the end of her teets. She had done this off and on this month but today was different. There was more and it changed from morning to evening. Her udder was fuller on this morning too. It looked like she had leaked a creamish substance down her back leg too that afternoon.
#2 is her back end was sunken in more and softer. Her vulva seemed to stick out like it was swollen and the muscle around it seemed sunken in more if that helps picture it. Her muscles had to relax and stretch out in order for the baby to pass through. This was more prevalent then days previous.
She ended up foaling just after midnight. Day 329! We were not there and thank goodness everything went well. In the morning I came to feed and check on her and there laying on the ground below her was a very cute dry foal. I was so excited to see a happy Healthy foal.
(This is where you should take great caution!)
I cautiously entered the pen and slowly walked up to my horse. I patted her down and told her what a good mamma she was and then I started rubbing down the foal. She was so soft. I checked her and sure enough she was a filly. I am excited! Once the filly got up instinct triggered in my horse and I could not get too near her or the filly. So I am grateful for the little short moment I got with her.
(this picture is right after I got her up)
Basking in the morning sun....We were so lucky it was such a nice morning.
She is adorable!
When I went back that day I cleaned out the pen and tried to maneuver my way around without getting too close. My horse had her ears flattened back most of the time I was in there and kept giving me her rear. Interpretation: She was ticked at me for being in there and wanted to kick me. I can't even touch my horse without her getting mad.
She's a dark one. It will be interesting to see how her coat changes as she develops more.
I love this!! Nothing more satisfying then to see a good mamma and a healthy foal eating and getting full. Our little filly took a nice nap after this.
So far I have learned that it is best to do what you can out of the way of mamma and baby and to be very cautious, especially when your doing it 8 months pregnant. :)
Hopefully in a few days she will calm down. I want to brush my horse down and I want to cuddle that cute baby girl!
